Bell Ringing in the Sheepy Group

The Sheepy Group is fortunate that all five of its historic churches enjoy the benefit of bells, although with varying degrees of serviceability.

St Edith's, Orton-on-the-Hill - the fifth bell arrives

All Saints Church, Ratcliffe Culey

Ratcliffe Culey church has two bells currently stored on the church floor, but there are proposals to re-hang them, for chiming only.

St James' Church, Twycross

Twycross has three bells, but the present structural state of the tower and the bell-frame prevents them from being rung.

All Saints Church, Sheepy Magna

Sheepy has a ring of six bells on plain bearings, within the original wooden frame.  They are a little heavy to ring and are difficult to hear inside the ringing chamber.

St Botolph's Church, Sibson

Sibson has an excellent ring of six bells, after the installation of two 'new' trebles in July 2007.

St Edith's Church, Orton-on-the-Hill

Orton-on-the-Hill installed a new treble in October 2007, to augment its ring to six (see picture below).  Funding was provided by the Keltek Trust.

News

St Botolph's Church, Sibson - The local band of ringers rang the first Quarter Peal on the new bells on 14th October 2007.  The members of the Hinckley Guild, who assisted this project significantly, has rung the first Full Peal.

St Edith's Church, Orton-on-the-Hill - On August 10th 2008 a team of ringers, including tower captain Graham Titley, rang the first Full Peal on all six bells.  This involved 5,040 changes and took 2 hours 37 minutes.

The Reverend Annette Reed has thoroughly enjoyed being involved with the bell project at Orton-on-the-Hill and wishes all Sheepy Group Bell Ringers 'Happy Pealing'! (October 2006)

Ringing within the Sheepy Group is based primarily on the local group at Orton-on-the-Hill, but it extends to cover the towers at Sheepy Magna and Sibson for significant services and weddings.  We continue to encourage new members to increase the number of ringers in the villages, so that service ringing can be provided on every suitable occasion.

Practises are held on Monday evenings (from September 2009), from 7.30 - 9.00pm, on a rotational basis, as part of the extended Fenn Lanes Group of ringers.  Ringing is at Mancetter on the first Monday in the month; Sibson on the 2nd; Polesworth on the 3rd; Orton-on-the-Hill on the 4th and at an additional local tower on any 5th Monday.  Other ringing opportunities are available within the group on other weekday evenings, (please check the calendar on the Fenn Lanes Ringers web site).  Ringing covers all levels.  New learners and visiting ringers are encouraged and always most welcome.

Sibson Hand Bell Ringers

Sibson Hand Bell Ringers need new faces to replace those who have left the Parish (Autumn 2009).  No musical skills are required.  We have a lot of fun and raise hundreds of pounds each Christmas for Acorns and LOROS hospices.  Please come and join us.
